Top Gun Maverick is currently KILLING it on its theatrical run to cinemas around the world. But when can we expect a streaming release date for Top Gun Maverick? Let’s find out…
After numerous delays, the global COVID pandemic, and a lengthy live-action shoot that saw the cast literally fly in fighter jets, Top Gun Maverick is finally in theaters.
It is also a film that is worth seeing at the cinema. If you love the spectacle and the classic, live-action filmmaking is the perfect cinematic antidote to MCU’s CGI overload.
I have already discussed at length my disdain for the overuse of CGI in modern cinemaI was therefore pleasantly surprised to discover that Top Gun Maverick not only used real fighter jets for its sequences but also placed the actors inside!
Say what you want about Cruise, his bizarre beliefs and such, but as an actor and producer, his commitment to the films he creates and stars in is unparalleled.
Cast of Top Gun Maverick
- Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell
- Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw
- Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin
- Jon Hamm as Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson
- Ed Harris as Radm. Chester “Hammer” Cain
- Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky
No one else does what they do, whether you’re talking about really crazy stunts or just using real vehicles and people in their movies instead of relying on CGI.
If you can’t make it to the cinema to see Top Gun Maverick or if you’re avoiding the cinema due to COVID, you’re probably wondering when Top Gun Maverick will be available to stream. Me too, because I really want to see it again, so here’s everything I found out…
How to stream Top Gun Maverick
Top Gun Maverick is still in theaters right now and based on its performance, it just overtook Titanic for overall revenue, I would expect it to remain a theater exclusive for a while. Global movie chains need all the help they can get these days, so keeping Top Gun Maverick in circulation for longer makes a lot of fiscal sense.
For most people, however, streaming is now the preferred way to watch movies. I caught PREY this weekend, it premiered exclusively on HULU and Disney+, and it was truly fantastic. As far as the prequels go, this was one of the best I’ve seen to date – Watch out, Ridley Scott!
Top Gun Maverick hit theaters on May 27, 2022 in the US and UK. The film was produced by Paramount Pictures, so when it becomes available to stream, it will almost certainly be available first on Paramount+ – the only question now is WHEN!?
If we look at some of Paramount’s other IPs, the company usually releases movies on Paramount+ around 45 days after it ends its run in theaters. If Top Gun Maverick follows the same pattern, which it clearly doesn’t, it would be available to stream around August.
Whatever happens, when it does eventually get a streaming version, it will almost will certainly be exclusively available on Paramount+.
Top Gun Maverick streaming release
Well, it’s now August and there’s no news of Top Gun Maverick hitting streaming platforms any time soon. Why is this though?
Because this movie is so important, I imagine Paramount executives will use it as a marketing angle to push subscriptions in the fourth quarter.
By making Top Gun Maverick exclusive to Paramount+ and targeting a Q4 release, which means just in time for Christmas, Paramount could attract a huge volume of new subscribers to its books.
That’s what Disney just did with PREY; he primed the hype machine, dropped a load of cash on the film, and made its release on HULU and Disney+ an event, with the end goal of securing tens of thousands of new subscribers.
Given PREY’s research data, I think it probably worked too.
Top Gun Maverick is a MUCH bigger movie than PREY, however, so I would expect Paramount to use it to drive new Paramount+ subscriptions in the latter part of 2022. In the UK, Paramount+ costs £6.99 per month or £69 for the year. Sky Cinema subscribers will however have access to the platform for free.
