Severe thunderstorms, showers possible Monday afternoon in the Detroit metro area

DETROIT – Welcome to August! We hope you had a great weekend here in Metro Detroit as all eyes were on the big golf event at the Detroit Golf Club.

Things get tricky later in the day as we set off for a calm and mild start with no weather issues when you leave. Skies will become mostly sunny to partly cloudy with temperatures between the mid-60s and near 70 degrees as you walk, bike, bus or drive to work.

There is more humidity coming in with warm winds which will raise our afternoon high temperatures. Grab the umbrella before you go as we’re expecting showers and storms later Monday here in most of Metro Detroit.

Sunrise is at 6:26 a.m.

The storm forecasting center has put a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms today over the entire Detroit metro area, including the eastern inch in our northern zone to southern Ontario. We will see a nice summer mix of sun and cloud with highs heading into the mid to high 80’s feeling warmer with the humidity slowly rising with the help of gusty SSW 10-20 winds 25 to 30 mph sometimes before the storm hits.

A cold front will be moving towards us from the northwest bringing storms after 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., so keep an eye on the skies for a few storms that could produce damaging winds, brief showers and deadly lightning. The best time for storms today is 2-7 pm with a few spotty showers possible in the evening, but mostly wet will head east with the cool front setting us up for a nice day tomorrow.

Sunset is at 8:52 p.m.

Tuesday

Tuesday is shaping up to be good with a brief break this week from the hot and the muggies. Temperatures will be in the upper 50s to early 60s with mostly clear skies, and afternoon conditions will be great with mostly sunshine and highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and it will feel much lighter. Winds are light NNW 5-12 mph.

Wednesday

Wednesday is another big day to watch for heat and storm hazards headed our way. Look for highs of 90-95 degrees with increased humidity taking our heat ratings into or near triple digits. The sun starts early, then the clouds build up with the heat of the day before another cold front rolls over us from north to south. The timing is not definite, but there seems to be a few thunderstorms in the middle to late afternoon. The most promising chance of showers and more widespread thunderstorms will occur later tonight and Thursday morning. It would be a wonderful gift for grass and gardens.

Thursday

The latest computer model data shows the cold front stalling in metro Detroit on Thursday, keeping rain and thunderstorms in the mix throughout Thursday and highs dipping into the lower 80s in a humid atmosphere. It looks like some cloud cover will persist on Friday as well, keeping temperatures in the high 70s above 80 degrees as the humidity finally subsides with one or two isolated showers in far southeastern Lower Michigan and southern of Ontario.

This weekend

The weekend is still a long way off, but it looks like we’ll be warming up soon. We expect upper 80s to low 90s Saturday and Sunday here with a better chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.
