The Pokemon anime has been streaming for over 25 years, showing the game’s regions, gadgets, and Pokemon through the eyes of protagonist Ash Ketchum. Featuring a story centered around compassion, teamwork, and discovery, it’s no wonder the series continues to be a hit with Pokemon fans.
Although the anime follows a different narrative from the main game series, there are fundamental similarities between the two. Ash and his friends usually travel to the newest region in the game, showcasing the region’s new landscapes and Pokémon forms. Any new regional Pokémon usually make some sort of cameo in the show, displaying an exciting area’s fun new creatures. However, it seems that the anime also hinted at future game features from the start.
One Pokemon fan, Twitter user @ActualAero, pointed out some illuminating similarities between past anime episodes and current games. Many were surprised at how often the anime reflected the latest gadgets; however, they began to theorize that maybe the anime and the games are more similar than previously thought.
Pokemon Anime – Predicting Game Gadgets?
It’s only been a day since Pokemon Presents August 3 revealed a new trailer for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Among the lightning bolts of the beautiful rolling fields of Paldea comes a particularly amusing revelation – Terastallization. Some Paldean Pokémon are able to crystallize into a form, changing their type and movement efficiency.
Seeing this, Pokemon fan @ActualAero realized that it looks surprisingly similar to the Crystal Onix in the Pokemon anime. Both Pokémon looked like gems, although Scarlet/Violet went further with the type change. Looking even deeper, they spotted a few more illuminating similarities:
In the image, ActualAero lined up screenshots of three Pokémon and corresponding screenshots from the anime. Misty’s Giant Gyrados (later revealed to be capable of Mega Evolve) above Pokemon XY’s Mega Evolved Gyrados. Next, a huge Dragonite floating above Pokemon SwSh’s Gigantamaxed Dragonite. Finally, an Onix Crystal above Pokemon Scarlet/Purple’s terastallized Sprigatito.
Looking at each of the ActualAero examples, the results are striking. It really looks like the Pokemon anime had a gameplay gimmick before it was implemented. Whether the anime inspired future games or slyly foreshadowed them is a startling revelation. Chances are this will be a fun collaboration that further unites the Pokemon media universe.
Following the discovery, some Pokemon fans joked that the game’s next gadget would feature all-pink Pokemon, much like Episode 88 of the anime. Although these pink Pokémon are the result of a region-specific berry, it’s a fun feature to think about. It’s possible the next game will bring back another exciting moment from the anime – but for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet will launch on November 18.
