The series is well known to anime fans as the definitive “mecha” franchise, the genre defined by its use of giant battle robots. The show’s popularity spawned a franchise that spanned various TV shows, movies, OVAs, manga, novels, and video games. And that’s not including the vast industry of plastic model kits that fans are known to collect! Currently, there is also a live-action film under the direction of Netflix and Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
