The Gundam franchise was born in 1979 with the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. The series is well known to anime fans as the definitive “mecha” franchise, the genre defined by its use of giant battle robots. The show’s popularity spawned a franchise that spanned various TV shows, movies, OVAs, manga, novels, and video games. And that’s not including the vast industry of plastic model kits that fans are known to collect! Currently, there is also a live-action film under the direction of Netflix and Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

On the panel, Naohiro Ogata, Gundam executive producer of the series, announced that the series would be set in a brand new century, Ad Stella, in the Gundam cannon. The reason is to attract new fans for the Gundam franchise. The series has also been announced to be simulcast, although no announcement has been made as to which streaming service will air the show.
