More than 10 inches of snow possible Wednesday through Thursday

DETROITGood Wednesday afternoon!

Southeast Michigan counties are under a winter storm warning through Thursday evening as an expected two-day storm is expected to drop several inches of snow in the region.

The morning rain turned to snowfall this afternoon, which will continue to fall throughout the evening. The snow has been heavy and wet due to the mild temperatures, but as the temperatures drop the flakes will become lighter.

Storms could drop 9 to 12 inches of snow in metro Detroit by Thursday evening.

Snowfall Timeline

Some of the worst weather with heaviest snowfall occurs Wednesday afternoon, when snowfall will fall at a rate of half an inch to one inch per hour.

With temperatures dropping from the mid 30s to nearly 30 degrees this afternoon, the snow will be very difficult to navigate, due to massively reduced visibility and snow starting to stick to everything, including the roads .

The winds will start picking up in the late afternoon and evening, bringing our teenage wind chills down in the late afternoon. This wind will also cause blowing snow on our roads, especially after sunset.

We will likely see 4-7 inches of snow on the ground around 5 p.m. Wednesdaywith a few extra centimeters possible throughout the evening.

Time

Today’s sunset is at 5:49 p.m.

Consistent snow showers will continue to arrive and continue to fall into Wednesday evening. Temperatures will dip into the 20s and then we expect breaks in snowflakes in some places.

Our northern area will likely see snow showers diminishing a little later tonight and part of the night. In fact, we could all see a nice break from the snow as we head into the night and early Thursday, which would really help our road crews stay even with the snow clearing on our roads, and maybe help the rest of us as we try to stay ahead of the game by shoveling our driveways.

More snow will move in as we head into early Thursday morning and the morning drive. So we might only have an inch or two cool on the floor while you sleep tonight until tomorrow morning.

More flurries will come in a second flurry on Thursday morning’s ride. Snowfall will occur primarily in the heart of Metro Detroit, which means less flakes for those north of M-59 or I-69.

Snow showers won’t be as heavy on Thursday, but we’ll still see a fairly consistent stream of snow on a very cool day.

Temperatures will be in the upper teens in the morning, then only in the lower 20s in the afternoon with a strong northerly breeze. These winds will shift from the north at 10-15 mph and gust to 15-25 mph, causing more blowing snow and snowdrifts on our roads. Additionally, we will enter the dangerous cold or wind chill category on Thursday, with temperatures more in the single digits to below zero at times.

Snowfall throughout Thursday will likely produce only 2 to 3 inches of new snow around Detroit’s metro. Most of us will end up with about a foot of fresh snow from both days.

Friday and beyond

Friday is the beginning of the end when it comes to snow. Indeed, the snow should very well cut or leave the area entirely between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday.

The roads will always be in poor condition. Blowing snow late Thursday will still be a problem Friday morning as breezes continue and roads will be icy. But the roads should improve throughout the day.

We’ll start with low single digit temperatures and sub-zero wind chills on Friday, then warm up to the upper teens with a little more sunshine through the afternoon. We will have lighter winds later in the day moving NNW at 5-12 mph.

The weekend looks dry right now, with lows near zero degrees on Saturday under clear, cold skies. Saturday afternoon highs will reach 20 degrees in mostly sunny weather. Sunday will bring more clouds and more heat as we reach highs in the mid to high 20s under partly sunny skies.
