Major: Adivi Sesh-star ‘Major’ starts streaming on Netflix

After enjoying a string of hits in cinemas, the Adivi Sesh, starrer ‘Major’ has been released on Netflix. On July 3, Netflix confirmed the release of “Major” on the platform via a Tweet, “The Untold Story of a Son. The Untold Story of a Father. The Untold Story of a SOLDIER.” Major will appear on Netflix from July 3 in Malayalam, Telugu and even Hindi! #MajorOnNetflix”

The film was released in theaters on June 3, 2022, to mixed reviews. Speaking to Indian Express, ‘Major’ lead actor Adivi Sesh said his film is an “all-Indian film” and not a “pan-Indian film”. He thinks the word pan-India has been somewhat misused and confused with “all Indian films”. He agreed that it sounded good at first because he felt the film was aimed at Indians all over the country. However, that started to sound a bit like an understatement for a dubbed movie.

At the same time, he said he likes pan-Indian movies like Uri: The Surgical Strike. He also mentioned Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s life journey before he was martyred, which speaks volumes about the film’s “all-India” appeal. Born in Kerala and raised in Bangalore, Major served as a captain in the Hyderabad cantonment and a training officer in Haryana. Before saving hundreds in Mumbai, he also fought in Kargil.

In his review, Manoj Kumar of Indian Express said that “Major” follows a path of familiar romance, rather than depicting soldier bravery entirely. While he agreed that Adivi Sesh gets most of the film, he says Major is not an authentic war movie and falls far short of realism. He added that Adivi, who also wrote the film, added a liberal dose of familiar romance that is a cliched trait in films made in India. He concluded by saying that director Sashi Kiran Tikka and writing duo Kodati Pavan Kalyan and Vinay Kumar Sirigineedi, have woven familiar themes into a non-linear narrative.
