A somewhat subjective assessment of today’s weather, on a scale of zero to 10.

4/10: It’s just too heavy.

  • Today: Partly sunny, hot and humid. Treble: low 90s.
  • This evening: Possible evening thunderstorm. Heavy. Bass: 70s.
  • Tomorrow: Partly sunny, muggy. Risk of storm at the end of the day. Treble: low 90s

We are in the middle of the second worst heat and humidity spell of the summer, which will last for three more days. This humidity will fuel the opportunity for showers and thunderstorms late in the day, especially Wednesday. From Friday to weekend, we welcome much less humid and cooler weather.

Today (Monday): The air is thick and uncomfortable from the moment you step outside. And as the sun rises, it only gets worse. Afternoon pop-up clouds only offer temporary shade with highs in the 90s and heat indices near 100 (dew points in the low to mid 70s) . A sunny shower or a brief downpour cannot be ruled out, but most storms are likely to head into the mountains. Confidence: medium-high

This evening: A few showers and thunderstorms could enter the region in the evening, especially north and west of Washington, but most of us are dry. Partly cloudy skies overnight with lows in the low to mid 70s in most places, but upper 70s downtown. Confidence: medium-high

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s more or less a carbon copy of Monday. Amid partly sunny skies, highs hit 90s, but it feels like 100s with the oppressive humidity. A few showers and thunderstorms could develop as the afternoon progresses. Confidence: medium-high

Tomorrow evening: Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in the evening, followed by another partly cloudy and humid night. Lows go into the 70s again. Confidence: Medium-High

Wednesday is a bit like Monday and Tuesday: hot. The highs point to 90 degrees. Clouds become heavy in the afternoon and evening, with showers and thunderstorms likely as a cold front approaches. Some storms could produce very heavy rain, localized flooding, dangerous lightning and damaging wind gusts. Still humid Wednesday night into Thursday morning with lows of 70 to 75. Confidence: medium to high

The forecast for Thursday depends on the front pushing far enough south for the moisture to fall and the chance of rain to decrease. At this time, it looks like we could hold on to some lingering humidity and perhaps the chance of a few scattered showers, especially in our southern and eastern regions. Highs are expected to reach around the mid 80s. We should finally clear and cool Thursday evening with lows in the 60s. Confidence: low-medium

The period of Friday to Sunday looks gorgeous with partly sunny skies, below average humidity (dew points in the 50s and maybe even 40s) and pleasant high temperatures of 80 to 85. Nights are generally clear and comfortable, with lows mostly in the 60s, except some upper 50s in our cooler regions. Confidence: medium
